What stopped me was an appreciation of the work that has been put into the creation of the universe and the detail into which the author has gone to figure out all the aspects that make the Ringworld viable and real. In Niven’s writing I do struggle to picture some scenes and I was tempted to stop reading at points as I could not piece together everything that was being portrayed. With that background I was able to go into the story with a knowledge of one of the main characters, the other alien species and why the task they set out to achieve was worthwhile and challenging. If you are sufficiently inspired to read Ringworld then I suggest you do the same. I read two books of short stories that established some of the principles that underpin the universe: Neutron Star and Tales of Known Space. I’ve wanted to read it for a while but I had heard that it was better to get an introduction to Larry Niven’s sci-fi universe called “known space” before starting it, so I did just that. Getting to read this book has been a bit of a journey. After learning that his uncle Randolph has unexpectedly sent his uncle Frederick and cousin Annabeth to search for him, Magnus breaks into Randolph's house to look for answers. It won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for Middle Grade and Children's Fiction. The book has appeared on The New York Times children's Best Seller list and the Amazon best-seller list. The Sword of Summer received positive reviews from critics, who praised its plot, humor, the inclusion of diverse characters, and mature themes, but also noted it failing to rise above the author's previous work. The novel is narrated in the first-person view by Magnus Chase, 16-year-old demigod and homeless orphan and after his death he arrives in a Norse afterlife as an Einherji, Magnus discovers that he is the son of the Norse deity, Frey, and must stop Fenris Wolf from leaving his prison and ending the world. It was published on October 6, 2015, by Disney Hyperion, and is the first novel in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series. The Sword of Summer is a young-adult fantasy novel based on Norse mythology written by American author Rick Riordan. Print ( hardcover and paperback), audiobook, e-book When they were all horribly murdered, leaving Lore alone, she decided to leave that brutal world forever. Her family was one of the last of the bloodline. She was once a part of a world full of gods as a descendent of Perseus. In the middle of New York, there is a girl named Lore who has felt more heartbreak in her life than any teenager should. But Lore’s decision to bind her fate to Athena’s and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost - and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees. The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods. For years she’s pushes away any thought of revenge against the man - now a god - responsible for their deaths. Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family’s sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality. By the end of the Protectorate series we knew far more than a dapper wolf.īiffy, too, evolved from being a name on a page to a full blown character to the brand new Alpha. Carriger gave him depth and charm and also, as the series progressed, complications. I, along with many other fans, have adored Lyall ever since he fished a ham and pickle sandwich out of his waistcoat and presented it to the hungry Alexa after her tea was interrupted. Gail Carriger returns to the Parasolverse in the best way, with a short love story about everyone’s favorite Beta Professor Lyall.
